    The NAIDOC Ball is traditionally seen as a highlight to complete the celebrations of NAIDOC week. The Ball provides the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community with the opportunity to celebrate their culture and achievements in a formal setting which encourages people to dress formally for the event, building overall self esteem and pride. For many people, the NAIDOC Ball is seen as a major social event for the Indigenous Calender year.

    The NAIDOC Ball aims to draw attention to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the First Nations people of Australia, and to celebrate their culture and achievements through music, song and dance as part of the NAIDOC Week events. It is an opportunity to promote and showcase the talents and artistic abilities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entertainers; and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to advertise their services and programmes which support people Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Perth community.

    In 2008, the NAIDOC Ball will dedicate a component to highlighting the achievements of Indigenous AFL footballers, coinciding with the 150 years celebration of the AFL.

    Also this year, the NAIDOC Perth Committee are encouraging people to come dressed in Indigenous designed gowns, suits and fabrics. There will be prizes for the best Indigenous gowns and suits.
