-Media Release-

WINNER OF NAIDOC PERTH LOGO COMPETITION
13 YEAR OLD HELENA CHESTNUT
For Immediate Release 27 May, 2008

NAIDOC Perth (Inc.) are proud to announce the winner of the NAIDOC Perth Logo Competition and present the new logo for NAIDOC Perth. Helena Chestnut, a 13 year old student from Mt Lawley Senior High School, was one of a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school students who entered the competition. Helena will be presented with a prize and certificate by the Chair of NAIDOC Perth, Glenda Kickett, at the next Mt Lawley SHS assembly on 2 July 2008.

Ms. Kickett explains the significance of the logo: “The NAIDOC Perth logo will be used from now on, on all NAIDOC Perth promotional materials. We aspire for the logo to become a well recognised feature in Perth that positively promotes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culture and achievements”.

The logo will be used to promote events NAIDOC Perth are managing including the NAIDOC Perth Awards, the NAIDOC Perth Opening Ceremony (on Sunday 6 July 2008 at Wellington Square, East Perth) and the NAIDOC Ball (on Friday 11 July 2008 at the Hyatt Regency).

Ms. Kickett was impressed by the designs submitted and in particular, Helena’s design. “We were delighted to have had such an outstanding selection of designs from our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school children in Perth for the competition. The Committee was extremely impressed by the complexity, thought and detail in Helena’s design, which we believe will be well received by the Perth community. The snake surrounding the words “NAIDOC Perth” is significant in that it represents the Wagyl. We have also incorporated a Balga Bush into the design, which is significant and iconic to the Perth and surrounding areas. We ask that the Perth community embrace our logo and join us in congratulating Helena on her beautiful artwork.”

NAIDOC Perth would like to encourage as many people as possible to become involved in NAIDOC Week by nominating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for awards and participating in various events that will be held around Perth during NAIDOC Week, which this year is between the 6 and 13 July. Information about how to become involved and a program of events is available at www.naidocperth.org.

“I urge all Australians to get involved in NAIDOC Week this year. It’s a time for us all to openly celebrate and embrace the achievements and contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations make, not only to this city, but to Australia overall!” said Ms. Kickett.

GLENDA KICKETT, NAIDOC Perth Chair is available for interview.
